Her father has been dead for six days. Tonight, he is asking her to turn off the tap.
The Rain Beneath Flat Nine is a new English-language horror short read published by AditsBlogs under the author name Aditya Singh. Set in Kolkata, it follows a sound archivist who inherits an apartment above a history nobody wants recorded.
A dry ceiling. A steel bowl. A voice that should be gone.
Mira Sen expects dust, paperwork and grief when she opens her father’s flat. Instead, she hears rain in an empty room. A cassette hidden in a rice tin carries the voices of people erased from the building’s official history. Every time she listens, another piece of her memory changes.
Her father left three instructions: do not play anything back inside; do not answer a voice you recognise; if it asks for a name, give it the truth. The last warning is the one she understands too late.
For readers who enjoy quiet, unsettling horror
Expect a haunted-apartment mystery, borrowed voices, unreliable memories and buried family secrets. This is a complete standalone short story of approximately 6,700 words across nine chapters. It is a short read, rather than a full-length novel.
Read the opening
The first thing my father said after his funeral was that I had left the tap running.
His voice came from an empty room.
I was standing outside Flat Nine with a recorder in one hand and the keys in the other. There had been no rain in Kolkata for eleven days. The stairwell smelled of hot dust and the mustard oil someone downstairs was heating for dinner. Inside the flat, beyond the closed door, water struck a hard surface with the heavy, irregular rhythm of a monsoon.
Then: “Mira. The tap.”
